I must admit that I was nervous that school might not be the best place for the intimate coming-together of girls with Big Sisters. I suppose I was thinking back to my own school days and those dreary buildings designed to facilitate a regimented, authoritarian learning process. As soon as the bell rang for end of lessons I was out of there like a shot. I couldn’t envisage returning for anything other than lessons or sporting events.
Fortunately for those participating in our first 1-2-1 sessions, however, the venue has proved to be a valuable part of the whole process. The architects of Sir William Stanier School have demonstrated their understanding of the ways in which the built environment can affect human behaviour. This beautiful modern building actually caters well to the needs of our 1-2-1 sessions by providing safe, comfortable, bright and attractive spaces which are conducive to intimate and meaningful conversations.
The successful start to our 1-2-1 programme is the result of careful preparation, training, enthusiasm and good will but, in addition, we at GOL are happy to feel a part of the school itself and to be gratified by the way that even the building can inspire staff and pupils alike to reach towards a brighter, better future.
